Music with computers is where it started with the MTU products. Hal Chamberlin wrote many articles in e.g. Byte (see this page with his publications) and a hardware product supporting this is the K-1002 D/A 8 bit converter. It is to be connected to the application connector of KIM-1, SYM-1 or AIM 65.
Later a variant for the PET 2001 was produced with the name K-1002-2
The hardware is simple and uses standard components of the period, 1979.

See below for a reproduction of the K-1002 hardware and software by Eduardo Casino.

Replica of the K‑1002 by Eduardo Casino
A faithful replica of the K‑1002 8‑bit audio Digital‑to‑Analog Converter card and software for the KIM‑1, SYM‑1, and AIM‑65 computers, originally designed by MTU in the late ’70s.
All details, hardware and software, are available from this repository.
Here I added a summary.

Software
The programs in the manual “MTU K-1002-L 8 bit Digital Music Software” and “MTU Instrument Synthesis Software Package” are typed in by Eduardo:
- Simplified Interpreter
- Notran Interpreter
- Notran Compiler
- Synthesis Software
PC utilities are written also:
- wavegen is a modern C version of the kimfs program. It generates a waveform table suitable for use with the MTU utilities from a very simple YAML description file.
- notcmp is the C version of the NOTRAN compiler. It accepts the same input files as its MTU counterpart and generates compatible object code for the NOTRAN interpreter.
- notint is a NOTRAN interpreter simulator that can either play a NOTRAN bytecode file through an ALSA device or generates WAV files to be played with any WAV player.
KIM-1 Application connector adapter
Although the card uses the familiar 44‑pin edge connector, it’s not a 1‑to‑1 match for the KIM‑1 application bus, so an adapter is required, as explained in the manual. I’ve also designed such an adapter, which you can find in the adapter folder at the github site of Eduardo..
