The Retro Chip Tester was developed to test “old” memory chips from the 1970s and 1980s, which are often no longer recognized by today’s programming devices.

January 2021: I am building one!
- PCB ordered and received from See 8bits-museum.de
- Parts ordered at Reichelt and received
- LCD ordered at amazon,de and received
February 2021: Finished building, it is working. Not a difficult job, well documented build.
First impressions: a bit hard to operate and find the right device. Also the firmware update is quite hard to do, that is so user unfriendly!
Second impression after several years: not used often, for most tests the Backup Chip Tester Pro is the preferred device, since it tests CPUs and other 65XX devices. Only for special RAM ICs the Retro Chip Tester is the only option. I never upgraded the firmare, I do have the programmer, but fear the procedure.
